Tata Chemicals

Eliminating the mystery in chemistry

Making chemistry fun for kids again with a website for Tata Chemicals

The Challenge:

Tata Chemicals is one of India’s largest chemical companies. The senior management at the company realised that chemical companies by and large were treated with a lot of distrust by the general public. What’s more fewer and fewer people are qualified in the field of chemistry. As a long term goal the company was seeking a way to make chemistry fun again for kids, while proving that this was an essential science being promoted by a responsible chemical company.

The Work

The Solution:

The website “The Human Touch of Chemistry”was conceived as an online platform for content that made chemistry fun for kids. Features like an animated periodic table made learning chemistry interesting while original short stories for kids engaged on a wide variety of topics. The history of chemistry was covered with profiles of famous scientists who contributed to the field of chemistry. The site also covers real day issues that Tata Chemicals as a socially responsible company deals with, like sustainability.

The idea for the website won the agency its first two digital awards. A bronze Abby at Goa Fest 2010, and a Gold Indian Digital Media award during the same year.

The Experience

Project Diary:

Where was the Chemistry

I have to confess. Chemistry wasn’t quite a strong point for me. Between balancing equations and lab work, I’m lucky to have just about scraped through. So when I was asked to create content around this subject, I realised there was so much to it that we really don’t cover in school. This happy discovery spurred me on for what would turn out to be my first and most famed editorial project. Creating a wide variety of articles and short-stories for kids.

What I do remember are my client meetings and working closely with the PR team and Allan. Interesting discussions and a lot of hand-holding even when we had handed over the project. The client was so happy that they even gave the team a certificate of appreciation as a valued partner. What's more this was one of the first key projects that I worked on with Prashant Ambetkar who joined us as a manager for the art talent.
